Whether you would love your little one's fingerprint, handwriting from a loved one that you've lost, or anything in between, on a piece of sterling silver jewellery and keepsakes, then Smallprint is the answer.
Having personally received a piece as a gift and followed on to ordering a gift for someone myself, I can truly say that the feeling you get when you receive a piece from Smallprint is beautiful and emotional (in the best way possible), as well as watching someone else open theirs. I couldn't recommend it more!
So, meet Kira Bosch, the owner of Smallprint Cape Town...
What sparked the idea of Smallprint and what does the brand sell/offer?
I am part of a global network of franchises and I own the Cape Town Smallprint. We capture moments in time by using your loved ones' actual fingerprint, hand/footprint, writing, or drawing. So, we turn memories into sterling silver jewellery and keepsakes to cherish forever. We take prints from newborns to adults (fur babies too), and if you have lost someone dear to you, we are able to use their fingerprints from a driver's license or their handwriting from an old card.
I can imagine there are a lot of smiles and perhaps loads of happy tears when a client receives their piece(s) from you. For you personally, what is the most rewarding part about your business?
Most definitely the reactions from my customers when they receive their Smallprint piece, as each unique piece tells a story. I love helping my customers capture those memories and moments in life they wish to hold onto.
What goes into creating each piece? Do you have a team that helps or is it all handmade by you?
It is all handmade by me. There are many steps to creating each piece, starting with taking the prints (if needed, unless the customer has existing prints), then the editing, sanding, firing the pieces in my kiln (at extremely high temperatures), right through to polishing and packaging. I love seeing the final product come together from start to finish.
Alongside running your business, you're also a mom of two. How do you manage to balance it all?
I’m not sure I have the balance thing all worked out yet, not sure we ever do as solopreneurs. It's definitely not easy being the CEO, sales/marketing/production manager, content creator, office admin, coffee maker, and Mom (lol) but I'm getting better at implementing more routine and structure into my workday, which really makes one more productive and more efficient with time, which is key. Also, learning to take time for myself is hugely important.
What is your biggest tip for someone who is wanting to start their own business?
I would say if it's something you love, then go for it, believe in yourself, and grow with your business. I am learning so much about myself as I grow my business, and I am learning to enjoy every step of the journey. Set goals, have a business plan, ask for help, join a community, and collaborate!
Which platforms do you use to market your business?
Facebook and Instagram
I also have a website for online sales/orders, but customers can order directly with me via email or WhatsApp, which I prefer as I really enjoy chatting with my customers to find out exactly what they are after and giving it that personal element.
Would you say social media has helped Smallprint with its growth? If so, how?
Oh yes, definitely, as I have direct communication with my customers and I'm able to reach more people using my target audience while gaining valuable insights and feedback.
